Dear S.F Said,
I am Atyeo, I'm 8 years old and I am in year 4 and I was thinking that you could come to highgate junior school in north london. Its because I love your books and I would really like to learn how you write your stories and what inspires you. I asked the headmaster and he said he would welcome you warmly. I think the other kids will love it too!

I am writing this on my fathers computer and you can answer to his e mail. I hope you will say yes.

Yesterday I got Phoenix and am looking forward to reading it.

Thank you

Atyeo Thomas du Toit

Dear Atyeo,

Thank you so much for your wonderful comment! I would love to visit your school, but I would need the school itself to invite me. Could you maybe ask your headmaster to get in touch with me, by leaving a comment here with an email address I can reply to?

Thanks so much again - and I hope you enjoy reading Phoenix!

Hi, we are Y6 teachers who teach in multicultural North London primary school who have been using your Varjak books for 5 years. We use the books as a stimulus for writing and to explore PSHE themes of bullying, being differnt, friendship, grief and loss and self-esteem issues. Each year the children get so much from your books and this year they have become completely obsessed. We have written letters asking if you could visit us. We would like to arrange a visit in the new yaer if that is possible. Many thanks Fiona Gunn-Stokes.Y6 teacher and Assistant Headteacher and Alex Hall Y6 teacher

Dear Fiona & Alexander,

Dear Mr Said,

I am a year 4 teacher in a school in South London. I have been reading Varjak Paw for 4 years now to my year 4 class and every year I am so thrilled at how much the children are absorbed into the world of Varjak and his family. Your books inspire the children that I teach year upon year and I am wanting to enquire about a possible visit to my school from you? My children would just be thrilled if this were to happen!

I look forward to your reply,
With many thanks,
Miss Groves

Dear SF SAID, you have visited new north academy and I was one of the pupils. So far I have written 5 MINI SHORT STORIES because you have inspired me to do so. I have learnt a lot from you and I will cherish your visit I hope you write another Varjak one of my ideas was varjak having a twin called varjak Claw and he could be bad. That could be a special edition . I really wish you would use some ideas in your books such as Holly and Varjak getting married! Thanks again (annonymous)

Dear sf.said
I was in the class which you visited at The New North Academy. I'm the one who asked you to sign the back and the front of the 2 books. I want to thank you so much for your visit and hope you luck in your new book!
P.S is your new book called Light of the Oracle ... ?
Your sincerely
Semih Oguz

SF Said said...

Thank you so much for that amazing comment! I'm really glad to hear about your writing - keep going, and never give up!

I like your idea about Varjak Claw! I probably won't write that one myself, but if you would like to write it, I think you should - I love it when people write stories based on my books!

Thanks again for the great welcome - I'm just making a blog about the visit now...

SF Said said...

Dear Semih,

Thank you so much for your kind comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the visit; I really enjoyed meeting you all, and signing the back & front of the books! I'm just about to make a blog about the visit...

My new book is not called Light Of The Oracle. I noticed an entry on a website that said it was, but not everything you read on the internet is true! I've never written a book with that title, and don't intend to. The working title of my next book is TYGER. I hope it won't take 7 years this time!

Best wishes,

I really loved your visit. I remembered the part when you explained the way you inspired to become a writer and this inspired me to become a writer and I have started to make some story idea's which is going to be based on Varjak! Thank you for visiting!

I am so glad you came to our school and said we were one of the best you have met.I cant wait until the new book TYGER comes out.In my opinion I think it's going to be about a tiger that goes on an adventure and gets captured by other animals which try to kill him.make sure it doesen' t take you a long time(not worse than 17 drafts.)

New North Academy...Zakaria Ahmed.

SF Said said...

Dear Zakaria,

Thank you so much for your fantastic comment, it really means a lot to me! I can't say too much about TYGER yet, as it's still in the early stages, but I will do my best to make sure it doesn't take so long this time - definitely not 17 drafts!!!

Dear SF Said

It’s Atyeo, remember the guy who invited you to my school?
Well, I am very grateful for you coming to Highgate School on Wednesday.

And by the way PHOENIX was the best book you have ever written (in my perspective) it was very exciting and my favorite part was when lucky was a star and everyone was saying that he saved them but it was all very, very good. I really liked the fact that you used some elements of truth in the story making it educational. The reason I know that is because me and my friend went to the science museum and saw a film on space!

Please can you write another book?
You are too good a writer to stop plus I’ve read all your books and the whole world needs more!

From Atyeo ☺ ☺

SF Said said...

Hi Atyeo! Of course I remember – and I'm very much looking forward to visiting Highgate School – though the visit is today, rather than Wednesday. I hope I'll get to meet you!

Thank you so much for your wonderful words about Phoenix; they really mean a lot to me. I think it's the best book I've written so far, too. And I'm really glad you went to the Science Museum, because I did a lot of research about space and stars while writing it!

Do you know about the weRead Book Award? They're asking readers to write reviews of books including Phoenix...

And don't worry, I'm writing another book right now! It's called TYGER. I'm on the 3rd draft, so still a long way to go; but I hope that one day, it will be even better than Phoenix.

Thank you so much again!

Dear SF Said,

Will you please come to our school? We really love “Varjak Paw.” Even though we haven’t finished the book yet, I really want to know the four other moves of “The Way”. It is so exciting! It is one of my favourite books and Mummy said she would get the other book for me too when I have finished. I think it is strange that every cat in the family names begins with the letter J, even Jalals.
At the moment we are writing speeches from the Paw family members about why they should stay in the Contessa’s house and why they should leave. Most people in my class think that they should leave, the other ones think that they should stay because the Contessa might not have died.

I am in Year 3 at St. Andrew’s Primary School in Streatham, so hope it is not too far for you to travel, if you can come. Lots of children at St. Andrew’s would love to meet you and you can stay for lunch. I really hope you can come, my Headteacher Mrs Assid would like to meet you and so would my friends.. Thank you for writing such a brilliant book.

Dear SF
I am a teacher at Haseltine Primary School in South East London and our Year 6 classes have just finished reading ‘Phoenix’ and produced their finest writing yet as a result of being so inspired by this beautiful book. As a treat we took them to the Planetarium at Greenwich yesterday and on the way back we popped into the museum to have a look around. You can imagine how excited a few of them were to discover a thirteenth century Persian astrolabe on display!
We have published some of their stories on our website but the children would be so thrilled if you could read them too. Is there any possibility of us sending a few to you? They were utterly enchanted by the story and we managed to get some real poetry and magic out of their writing. Thanks for creating such a vivid and thought-provoking story!

With best wishes,

SF Said said...

Dear Moritz and Max,

Thank you so much for your kind comment! At the moment, the German rights to Phoenix are still available. If you would like to see it translated into German, the best thing to do would be to ask German publishers to publish it, and let them know that there would be an audience for it in Germany! Perhaps a good one to start with might be Carlsen, who published Varjak Paw?

With best wishes to you and your son,

Dear SF Said,

I am Victor from about two years ago. I used to live in France, but now moved back to China. I haven't checked on this blog for ages, as the Chinese Government has also blocked Blogger with its firewall. When I finally found a way around it, one of the first things I did was to go on this blog and find out what's new. Nothing much has changed, I guess, but what I'm pretty disappointed to see no news about your process on the book you are currently writing, Tyger.

I have always loved your books, ever since Varjak Paw caught me and dragged me into the world of the "kung-fu cats" ,when I was 10. I could tell that I finally found the right author. Afterwards, I continued with The Outlaw Varjak Paw, then, Phoenix. I remember you recommending me to read Phoenix whilst waiting for your next book to come out. I have indeed read it, and many times, and could read it thousands of times without getting bored, but I just simply can't wait for your next book to pop out!

As you have said, Phoenix is indeed your best book -yet- ,and I sincerely loved it, it's one of the best books I've ever known, and there's several reasons to that, and I'm going to state them for anyone that hasn't read it yet. As I went through Phoenix, I could feel the world of Lucky myself, almost as if I were with the team, shooting through space to save the entire universe. Of course, I like feel that anytime I read any book, but the sensation with Phoenix was different, there is something more than just simply feeling, something so awesome I can't even explain, and that only happens with books I seriously enjoy; it is a book in which people can understand and learn lots of different things whilst reading it, and one of the first things I realized when I first read the book was to always listen to your mother (0.0). There are zillions of other treasures to dig up from that book, such as -the most obvious ones- never give up, be responsible for your mistakes and never ever start a fight, unless you really have to, and in most cases, you don't. I can go on and on making a list of gems and diamonds people would find reading this book forever. Digging deeper, they would find even more, and never stop discovering new ones. There was always something new to learn each time I read this book again; this is also a greatly organized book, not rushed, and everything makes sense, unlike the last book I read. That book had an interesting plot and a great story that makes you want to read on, but sometimes, things don't make sense, or seem messed up. The end of that book was so rushed that many things don't even connect, and scene passed too quickly without much details. The ending was also incomplete. Maybe the ending was supposed to be like that, but the other facts made the book somehow not quite as good; the most important reason though, is because this book makes the reader think. If the reader were really into the book, they would go though it again and again, and try to connect things together, either with real life or other things in the story. Once they succeed, they would realise that this book has been a massive amount of work, and that it could have a lot of ways to be understood. But I've been told Tyger would be even better…

If your best book is yet to come, could you please tell us about it? We'd love to hear more about it, even several sentences about where you are, and how long you think it might still take would please me, and your fans enormously!

Sincerely,
Victor

By the way, every word I wrote is what I truly think, none of it unreal, but maybe with some exaggerated examples…
---And I did not know where to post this, so I'm commenting the same place I did several years ago.

SF Said said...

Dear Victor,

Thank you so much for writing again – I still remember your comment from two years ago! I'm so glad you read Phoenix and enjoyed as well. It took me 7 years to write that book, but all the hard work feels worthwhile when I read a comment like yours.

I'm going to make a blog post soon replying in more detail, with some more information about Tyger, as I think other readers might be interested too, and I'll put a link here to it when I do – but in the meantime, thank you once again – it's hugely appreciated!

With best wishes,
SF

Dear SF Said,
I am in a Year 3/4 class in a school in Cambridge and we have just finished reading Varjak Paw, the children were inspired. After the Christmas holidays we are going to start our topic on writing for suspense with Varjak Paw as our inspiration. It would be wonderful if I could get some information on your school visits and see if you could maybe come down and show us how to truly write for suspense.

Thank you,

Miss Luddy

Hi Mr Said, are you available for any primary school visits for 4 year 5 classes or a whole school between now and April? Maybe between the 6th and and 10th of February in the West Sussex area?
Does it cost for a visit?

I was recommended your books and the illustrations with Phoenix are wonderful!

First of all thank you for the rich, descriptive story of Varjak Paw that I am currently preparing for my year 5 class in September. I can already see why its restless, adventurous and down-trodden hero has struck a chord with teachers and children alike and I am only on chapter 5.

I would love to be able to add to the children's experience by arranging the additional bonus of meeting the actual author of the book, so if you were willing, available and interested in coming to our nurturing, humble and welcoming school in South East London, we would be honoured by your presence.

Many thanks again.

I have rarely feel compelled to write and thank anyone but in this instance I do. I have been reading Varjak Paw with my 9 year old son, soon to hit the double digits of 10 on 14th of December.

The books are fantastic and hit the right note for children of all ages including myself (over 40 years old). To be honest at first I found them a bit too descriptive in terms of the aggressiveness and the themes of loss, betrayal and heartbreak. On several occasions I was going to suggest we stop reading. My son insisted we continue and I'm so pleased we did. Your books are a reflection of life's,highs lows and triumphs and we should not shield our children.I had missed the spirit of the story about perseverance against all odds and that's a valuable legacy. Your books have inspired him to read and I would like to thank you for that. Just purchased "Phoenix" for his birthday. My only issue is he now wants a cat and I'm not partial to our feline friends.

Thank you

SF Said said...

Dear Deedee,

Thank you so much for your wonderful message. You can't imagine how much it means to a writer to hear things like that. I don't find writing easy – Varjak Paw took me 5 years to get right – but all the hard work feels worthwhile when I hear things like that! So thank you, and please thank your son for me, and wish him HAPPY BIRTHDAY on December 14th! I hope he enjoys flying through the stars with Phoenix – here's Dave McKean's brilliant book trailer to get him started!

If you are available for visits to schools outside London that would be amazing as I know his whole class were very taken with the books. However I understand that it would be very difficult to arrange. I will also check to see if you are doing any book signings as I know he would love to meet you and DanTDM (U tuber) I think you are well ahead on those stakes. Lol!

I would like to thank you gain in my mother tongue Ndebele.. Ngeyabonga. You've made a little boy very happy.

Miss Ireson said...

Hello, Mr Said.

We are a Year 5 class from Ernesettle Community School in Plymouth. We have just finished reading Phoenix and we were astonished at the many twists and turns in the story, especially when we found out Diana used to be a Shadow Guard! Some of our favourite moments were when Lucky finally found his father and discovered his name wasn't actually Lucky at all.

We understand you are very busy, however we would like to ask you some questions about Phoenix (if you have the time to respond).

1. How did you get the inspiration for the book?
2. Why did you choose to have Diana sacrifice herself to save the Sunfire?
3. When when WHEN are you going to write a sequel?
4. How did you get the idea for Lucky's power and the name of the book?
5. What inspired you to become an author?

We were mesemerised by your story and cannot wait to see what you write next!

Best wishes, thank you so much for writing the book!
Class 5SI. Ernesettle Community School.

SF Said said...

Hello Class 5SI at Ernesettle Community School, and hello Miss Ireson!

Thank you so much for your wonderful message! I'm so glad that you enjoyed reading Phoenix. I will do my best to answer your questions:

1. How did you get the inspiration for the book?

Phoenix had many sources of inspiration, from science fiction films, to the science of space, to the most ancient mythology. I wrote about some of these inspirations here:
https://www.booktrust.org.uk/news-and-features/features/2017/august/s.f.-said---the-epic-story-of-phoenix/

2. Why did you choose to have Diana sacrifice herself to save the Sunfire?

I didn't choose to do that - Diana did!

3. When when WHEN are you going to write a sequel?

I love the fact that you want to read more - thank you! I don't have any plans to write a sequel to Phoenix myself, but I would be totally honoured if YOU were to write your own sequels! Some of the first stories I ever wrote were inspired by other people's stories. If you'd like to do that, here's something you might find interesting - a blog I made about the writing process, with lots of tips, and an early draft of the opening of Phoenix:

4. How did you get the idea for Lucky's power and the name of the book?

Those things developed as I worked on the book. They weren't there in the first draft, or even the second draft, as you will see if you look at the blog above! I do a lot of drafts, because my aim is always to make my books as good as I possibly can, and that takes a long time. I only realised that the book should be called Phoenix in the seventh and final year of writing it! Sometimes you know the title at the start, as I did with Varjak Paw; but sometimes you need to know everything in the story first, as I did with Phoenix.

5. What inspired you to become an author?

The books I loved when I was young inspired me to write my own books. I loved them so much, I wanted to write something that was even half as good one day. All authors are really just readers who take one more step, and write the stories they want to read. You can do this too - and you can do it at any age! Just write the stories you want to read yourself, and make them as good as you'd want those stories to be.

Happy writing and reading to you all!

Aspen Class said...

Hi,

We are Aspen class in a primary school. We are currently reading Varjak Paw.
A lot of children in this class have a question that they really would like to find out.
Their question is,
Why are all the illustrations in your book dark where the setting and the cats are more colourful?

Cannot wait to hear your reply.

Aspen Class

SF Said said...

Thank you so much for your message, Aspen Class, and thank you for reading Varjak Paw!

I think the best person to answer your question would be the artist Dave McKean, who did the illustrations in Varjak Paw. Although it's true that I wrote the book, I didn't do any of the illustrations - if you look carefully on the cover, you'll see Dave's name listed there as the illustrator. So he was the one who decided how things should look in the illustrations. I wrote a bit about the process of working with him in this blog post:
http://www.sfsaid.com/2020/05/collaborating-with-dave-mckean.html

Having said that, I really love Dave's illustrations. I think Varjak Paw is quite a dark story, and the darkness of the illustrations suits the mood of the events. But I believe it's always up to each reader to imagine things for themselves in their own way, even in books that have illustrations, so if you would like to see the cats drawn more colourfully - I would be honoured and delighted if you were to make those drawings yourselves! Draw them the way YOU imagine them, and would like to see them. And if your school has a Twitter account, you can always tweet me your pictures - I'd love to see them!

Thanks again, and keep the Way alive,

They have been passing it around the class since it has arrived in the classroom, with a waiting list now to read it.Those that are reading it take every opportunity to do so. It would be great if you could send a message/recording of yourself saying what inspired you to become the author you are today and any positive messages for the children of the class you may have if possible!

Many thanks,
Mr Smith and Mrs Haddon (4JS teacher and assistant)

Dear Class Mr Smith, Mrs Haddon and Class 4JS,

Thank you so much for your message, and for reading Varjak Paw! I hope you enjoy his adventures.

The books that I read and loved when I was young inspired me to write my own books. I loved them so much, I wanted to write something that was even half as good one day. All writers are really just readers who take one more step, and write the stories they want to read themselves.

I think you can do this too, and you can do it at any age - because I really do believe that if all writers are readers, then all readers can be writers too! I wrote a bit about this here:

Happy reading and happy writing to you all!

Dear Mr Said,

I am a teacher at Bousfield Primary School in London. We were in touch during lockdown, when I taught my two Year 4 classes your wonderful book, Varjak Paw. They loved it so much that they begged me to be able to write to you, to tell you how much they enjoyed reading it.

You kindly wrote back and it made their year!!

Word has travelled and this year's Year 4's were not going to miss out on such an opportunity. They also adored the book. So, they too have written you letters and would love to know where to send them please? They are on email form.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you so much,

Mrs Kay, Year 4 Teacher

Dear Mr Said,

I am a teacher in a large junior school in Hounslow and we would love it if you were able to come in and visit our Year 4 children during the summer term next year? Previous year 4 children have always loved Varjak Paw and it has motivated many children to develop a love of reading. We are also encouraging our Year 5s to read other books by you so hope a book signing might be an option?

I look forward to hearing from you!
