Varjak Paw Around The World, #7

#7: Finland

One of the nicest things about publishing a book is watching it travel the world. Varjak Paw has been translated into many languages; there are many editions around the world, and I've been doing a series of posts about them all. This week, I'm looking at the Finnish edition of Varjak Paw, where he's called Varjak Käpälä!

The front and back covers are very similar to the British editions, although the text is obviously in Suomi.  The interiors are similar too, with all of Dave McKean's beautiful artwork retained.  But I was excited to learn that The Wizard Of Oz becomes Ozin velho in Suomi!

Like Varjak Paw, The Outlaw Varjak Paw is published in Finland by Gummerus.  Again, the Finnish edition retains all of Dave McKean's beautiful art.

I've had some wonderful comments on this blog from readers in Finland, and I would be really interested to hear more about the translation, and about Finnish readers' experiences of Varjak Paw.  So please do leave me a comment if you've read the Finnish edition – or just say hei!

Hi from Ireland. My name is Niall, I am nine and a huge Varjak Paw fan. I wonder if you would like to write Jalal's story as a prequel to Varjak Paw. I have thought about this a lot. I would love to read about Jalal learning the way, and about his biggest battle. I think his rival would have been Sally Bone's ancestor and that she would have taught Sally Bones the way. I would love if you would reply, From Niall in Ireland

Hi Niall, thank you so much for your comment, and your kind words about Varjak Paw! I don't want to give too much away, but I think the third Varjak Paw book will have more about Jalal's early days, so I think you're on the right lines there!

With best wishes,
SF

Hello.
I am a teacher and am reading Varjak Paw to my class this term. I have a newly arrived Bulgarian boy in my class and was wondering how I could access a Bulgarian translation. Can anybody help?

Thank you very much for your message, and for reading Varjak Paw to your class! I don't think there has been a Bulgarian translation so far. There have been quite a few others, though – does he speak any other languages at all?
